Sukeban: Japanese Girl Gangs of the 70’s is a publication that gives readers a glimpse of a lost subculture in Japan from the 1970’s known infamously as the “sukeban” (スケバン): delinquent schoolgirl gangs that altered the Japanese school uniform and concealed weapons within them as forms of protest against a patriarchal society. They used personalization and customization to rebel against gender norms and feminine expectations. This movement sparked a media frenzy both in Japan and in the west, portraying the peak of girl gang violence. I aimed to capture the essence of the era by using monochromatic colour, Japanese and English typography, as well as pinpointing the focus specifically on their fashion.

This publication was created for a 1-week exercise as research for my undergraduate thesis, Overground.
